Why

In all projects that require automation, a process has to be monitored and controlled. Control necessitates the weighing of different factors and choosing which one is most important in each specific case.

How

Use the output from the modelling phase to decide on the signals that have to be measured with sensors. Choose the position and type of sensor, the type of controller, and the model to calculate controller parameters. Then select the appropriate controller parameters.

Practice

Using the model with the controller, simulations are run to theoretically verify that the controller works as anticipated. This approach (simulation followed by real life testing) is practiced in all controlled processes, for example, chemical plants, modern cars, and indoor climate systems.
